Away from Home

The candle was swimming in the cold
blue wax when they bought the wood home
an oak the sun had watched through
two hundred years of summer
fury and spiders or steel winters

And the love of trees in greenness
nutting seeding large tap roots
I watched my father carrying
a black branch haunting the sky
as rain fell like tears

and I wondered then and now
how many are the murders we commit
how often can the earth curse
how long will we last
without them
